Balloonists Disappeared Trying to Reach to the North Pole

100s of people tried to reach the North Pole in the 19th century by ship or sledge. All failed; dozens perished. But only three tried to reach the so-called Arctic Grail by balloon. Swedish engineer Salomon August Andrée told the Sixth International Geographical Congress in 1895 a hydrogen balloon could succeed where other methods had not.
