The Epstein Case Looms Large
POLITICS/LAW

When Jack Posobiec walked into the Department of Justice in Washington, DC last February, he thought he would finally get some answers about Jeffrey Epstein.

But when he and other MAGA supporters were given essentially just rehashed, already-public material - and when the government put a damper on the release of any new information this July - they balked.

Incredible how utterly mismanaged this Epstein mess has been. And it didn't have to be," Posobiec posted on social media on 7 July.

Syrian Presidency to  halt clashes with Force

WAR

The Syrian presidency says it will deploy a new force to halt the deadly sectarian clashes between Bedouin and Druze fighters in the south of the country.

Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa's office urged "all parties to exercise restraint", amid reports of renewed fighting near the city of Suweida on Friday.

Almost 600 people are reported to have been killed since the violence erupted...

Israel Demolishes 1000s of Buildings in Gaza
WAR

Israel has demolished thousands of buildings across Gaza since it withdrew from a ceasefire with Hamas in March, with entire towns and suburbs - once home to tens of thousands of people - levelled in the past few weeks.Satellite images show massive amounts of destruction in several areas which Israel's military command claims to have under "operational control".Large swathes of it have been caused by planned demolitions, both to already damaged buildings and ones that appeared largely intact.

6 Years After the US was Warned

CREATIVE XELLENCE
Politics

Dr. Bandy Lee the forensic psychiatrist and former faculty member at Yale School of Medicine, became widely known after editing the book "The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump," (2019).

Then Dean Blundell sub-titled this July 2025.

"From slurring speeches to gapping out and constitutional delusions, Trump's press conference was a real-time broadcast of a presidency in cognitive collapse."

Can AI Think for Itself

THE RUFFIAN

By Ian Leslie

Technology

Are our new AI tools intelligent in the same way humans are? Is an AI agent truly, well agentic? Does it have a mind of its own, so to speak? Might it just decide to destroy us? Or is this completely the wrong way to think about it?

Are Megafloods just Part of Nature

HEATED (Environments)

By Emily Sanders

***

Just before deadly flash floods devastated Texas, representatives of the oil and gas industry gathered to discuss how to protect themselves from the increasingly frequent and damaging extreme storms.

The American Gas Association organised a group of industry and utility representatives, as well as members of the National Governors Association, the Department of Energy, and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, to talk about how to prepare pipeline infrastructure and the energy grid “for high demand seasons and severe weather events,”

Companies Complicit in Israel’s ‘genocide’

ALJAZEERA

(Human Rights)

***

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has issued a report naming several US giants among the companies who have been aiding Israel’s occupation and war in Gaza. Companies from other countries – from China to Mexico – are also named.

The latest report names 48 corporate actors, including United States tech giants Microsoft, Alphabet Inc. – Google’s parent company – and Amazon. A database of more than 1000 corporate entities was also put together as part of the investigation.

Will Future Civilizations Bother to Excavate Our Remains?

PALLADIUM

(Environments)

***

The practice of archaeology is almost unique to our contemporary Western civilization rather than universal, and it is unlikely to be continued by future civilizations.
All civilizations study the past and read the texts handed down by their ancestors. What’s much rarer is systematically analyzing ancient artifacts and sites to figure out what past societies were like.
By default we assume that such a massive empirical-theoretical project is natural and obvious, and every sensible civilization would devote lots of resources to it.

Keir Starmer's Reality Avoidance Field

THE RUFFIAN

Politics

***

Keir Starmer became the first Labour Prime Minister in 14 years.

In Labour’s case the psychological and cultural shift required is immense. On one side of the equation: a series of interlinked crises demanding urgent and bold action. On the other, a leader who has spent the last four years moving fastidiously. As someone at the conference put it to me, as soon as Starmer enters Number 10 he will have to drop the Ming vase and run like hell. This doesn’t mean shredding his reputation for prudence; it does mean he and his team will need to think and act very differently to opposition.

Trump, Epstein and the Deep State

THE CHRIS HEDGES REPORT

***

The refusal by the Trump administration to release the files and videos amassed during investigations into the activities of the pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, should put to rest the absurd idea, embraced by Trump supporters and gullible liberals, that Trump will dismantle the Deep State. Trump is part of, and has long been part of, the repugnant cabal of politicians – Democrat and Republican – billionaires and celebrities who look at us, and often underage girls and boys, as commodities to exploit for profit or pleasure.

Against Death

THE MARGINALIAN

(Literature)

by Maria Popova

***

The year is 1937. Elias Canetti (July 25, 1905–August 14, 1994) — Bulgarian, Jewish, living in Austria as the Nazis are rising to power — has just lost his mother; his mother, whose bottomless love had nurtured the talent that would win him the Nobel Prize in his seventies; his mother, who had raised him alone after his father’s death when Elias was seven (the kind of “wound that turns into a lung through which you breathe,” he would later reflect)..

Perhaps Canetti’s reckoning with death is so virtuosic in articulating the potency and poignancy of life because it keeps inverting the lens from the microscopic to the telescopic and back again as he mourns his mother and mourns the world.

Encounter: Essays

By Milan Kundera

“I can’t imagine reading this book without being challenged and instructed, amused, amazed and aroused, and ultimately delighted.” —John Simon, New York Times Book Review

Milan Kundera’s brilliant collection of essays is a passionate defense of art in an era that, he argues, no longer values art or beauty. With the same dazzling mix of emotion and ideas that characterizes his bestselling novels, the internationally acclaimed author revisits the artists whose works help us better understand what it means to be human. Elegant, startlingly original, and provocative, Encounter combines many of the author’s signature themes with personal reflections and stories.
