Trump and Putin to meet about Ukraine POLITICS
US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Alaska next Friday to discuss the future of the war in Ukraine. Trump announced the 15 August meeting on social media and it was later confirmed by a Kremlin spokesperson, who said the location was "quite logical" given Alaska's relative proximity to Russia. The spokesperson added that Trump had been invited to Russia for a potential second summit. There was no immediate reaction from Ukraine.

Growing Older with Dignity
PERSUASION (Philosophy) ***
How rare it is for people to admit that growing older can be tough. This fascinating article by Ian Leslie originally appeared in The Ruffian. 'In the second half of life, we’re all expected to say how much happier we are than in our insecure twenties, how we wouldn’t swap places with our younger self, oh no, not even if you paid us.' The human condition is that we want it all, and we’re not willing to make trades… ‘Deathbed regrets’ typically have the bias of wanting the other path—the path they could have taken—without considering the cost of that path.

Stunning Ode to the Courage of Tenderness
THE MARGINALIAN (Literature)
***
No greater salve for sorrow than according gladness to another. What makes life livable despite the cruelties of chance — the accident, the wildfire, the random intracellular mutation — are these little acts of mercy, of tenderness, the small clear voice rising over the cacophony of the quarrelsome, over the complaint choir of the cynics, to insist again and again that the world is beautiful and full of kindness.

Will the Political Pendulum Swing Back?
THE NEW REPUBLIC (Politics) ***
The pendulum will swing back. It is a phrase invoked repeatedly, with variation, since Donald Trump’s reelection last November. Cable news anchor Chris Cuomo, Senator Angus King, and pollster Nate Silver have all invoked it to some degree. But will it?
