Stories from Around the World that Affect Us

The US tries to Sell Climate Denial to Europe

Trump sends fracking CEO to Europe to sell climate denial—and gas

Chris Wright, the massively wealthy former fracking executive who leads the DOE, is currently on a multi-day, taxpayer-funded trip to Europe to tell world leaders that the climate crisis is not really a big deal, and that the best way to protect their citizens is actually to buy more American gas.

Israel attacks Hamas leadership in Qatar

ALJAZEERA

(Human Rights)

Israel struck Qatar’s capital, Doha, on Tuesday, in missile attacks that it said were aimed at senior leaders of Hamas, including negotiators from the Palestinian group who have been engaged in talks on securing a ceasefire in Gaza.

Qatar condemned the attack as a violation of international law and of its sovereignty, with multiple countries and blocs also lashing out at Israel.

Two Million Evacuated from Pakistan Floods

BBC

(Environments)

More than two million people have been evacuated in Pakistan's Punjab province as floods sweep the country's eastern region

Another 150,000 have been evacuated in Sindh province, national disaster management chief Inam Haider Malik told reporters on Thursday, warning that the "number may rise over the coming days".

Monsoon rains have killed more than 900 people nationwide since late June, according to an update from the International Medical Corps on Friday.

Climate change has worsened floods in Pakistan, as heavy rains cause rivers to overflow.

No One Will See Me Again Forever

Literature

A new development in the story of a refugee from Afghanistan.

One of the essays I included in my 2020 book, BORDERLINE CITIZEN: Dispatches from the Outskirts of Nationhood, featured the story of an Afghan refugee I met with my daughter, Isabel, in Sydney, Australia. Like many such stories, it was troubling and confronting, compounded by a sense of helplessness, if not hopelessness on my part.

Women after new Taliban law

The daily English lessons that Shabana attends are the highlight of her day. The New Math of Quantum Cryptography

WIRED

(Quantum Physics)

Several years ago, researchers found a radically new approach to encryption that lacks this potential weak spot. The approach exploits the peculiar features of quantum physics. But unlike earlier quantum encryption schemes, which only work for a few special tasks, the new approach can accomplish a much wider range of tasks. And it could work even if all the problems at the heart of ordinary “classical” cryptography turn out to be easily solvable.

What 2020 Meant

During a joint session of Congress in March, President Trump declared: “Our country will be woke no longer.” The Trump administration has dismantled DEI across the federal government, pressured companies to do the same, slashed billions of dollars in university funding (ostensibly in response to antisemitism on campus, but also to impose political control and root out “critical race theory” and “gender ideology”), and kicked transgender soldiers out of the military. Administration officials have even justified the elimination of foreign aid on the basis that this aid sometimes goes toward what they regard as “woke” causes.

The Aesthetic of Silence

Susan Sontag on Art as a Form of Spirituality and the Paradoxical Role of Silence in Creative Culture

“The impulse to create begins — often terribly and fearfully — in a tunnel of silence,” Adrienne Rich asserted in her spectacular 1997 lecture Arts of the Possible. But it was exactly three decades earlier that another of humanity’s most incisive intellects made the finest — and timeliest today — case for the generative function of silence in a creative culture drowning in noise.

Fall Books

PRUFROCK

(Literature)

Unlike Town and Country—or Time or Oprah—I don’t pretend that the books I list below are “must-reads” or even the best books of the fall. I haven’t read most of them yet, so I don’t know how good (or bad) they might be. Some of them may turn out to be terrible. They are simply books that look interesting to me.

How Ideas Are Communicated

This hierarchy is easiest to observe in writing. In substance, a white paper is just a PDF, which in turn is just a Microsoft Word document. Yet, we know we would treat the same writing differently depending on its format. This is true even if there was very little change in the aesthetics of the document. We’ve all been trained to have emotional responses to mere format in line with what these differences mean for the use and standing of documents in organizations such as companies and universities.

Revolutionary Brothers

By Tom Chaffin

"Chaffin's well-told tale of two revolutions centers on the fascinating, sometimes intersecting careers of Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette." —Peter S. Onuf, coauthor of the New York Times bestseller, Most Blessed of Patriarchs

Thomas Jefferson and the Marquis de Lafayette shared a singularly extraordinary friendship, one involved in the making of two revolutions—and two nations. Jefferson first met Lafayette in 1781, when the young French-born general was dispatched to Virginia to assist Jefferson, then the state's governor, in fighting off the British. The charismatic Lafayette, hungry for glory, could not have seemed more different from Jefferson, the reserved statesman. But when Jefferson, a newly-appointed diplomat, moved to Paris three years later, speaking little French and in need of a partner, their friendship began in earnest.
