Israel attacks Displacement Shelters HUMAN RIGHTS
Since announcing plans to invade northern Gaza and expel Palestinians again to the south, Israel has attacked displacement shelters in the Gaza City neighbourhood of Zeitoun, according to an investigation by Sanad, Al Jazeera’s verification unit. Since August 13, Sanad has found that Israel stepped up the bombardment and shelling of Zeitoun, and often directly hit displacement shelters.

Pakistan Floods ENVIRONMENTS
Heavier than usual rains and sudden cloudbursts during this monsoon season kill more than 300 people in recent days. More than 100 people remain missing in northern Pakistan after flash floods have killed at least 360 across the country and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Most of the victims have been in the mountainous Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in the northwest, where entire villages have been swept away as swollen rivers, mudslides and collapsing homes left families buried beneath debris. Authorities have warned of more deluges and possible landslides and urged local administrations to remain on alert.

Alliance Reshaping Sudan Civil WarHUMAN RIGHTS
The alliance offers a unique path to national leverage and a strategic advantage embodied in the RSF fighters deployed to execute joint operations, as well as new vehicles and weapons, giving the SPLM-N resources lacked for years.
Even if the alliance works out, the presence of RSF in the Nuba Mountains will bring instability and “new waves of displacement”, making SAF “respond, worsening the already dire situation”.

That liberalism is under threat is now a cliché—yet this has done nothing to stem the global resurgence of illiberalism. Part of the problem is that liberalism is often considered too “thin” to win over the allegiance of citizens, and that liberals are too afraid of speaking in moral terms. Liberalism’s opponents, by contrast, speak to people’s passions and deepest moral sentiments.

Elon Musk and the Decline of Western Civilization
PERSUASION - FRANCIS FUKUAMA (Philosophy) ***
The fact that Berlusconi used his strategy so successfully in the 1990s was why Italy was never able to engage in a reform of its institutions as it could have done following the collapse of its old political order after the Cold War.
Oligarchs of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe used their business incomes to buy up declining legacy media companies, which in turn protected their businesses. These oligarchs threatened democracy by exerting undue political influence promoting corruption.

The Power of a Thin Skin
THE MARGINALIAN (Philosophy/Literature)
***
The boundary is so difficult to discern because, when all the stories fall away, there is no boundary — only a fluid, permeable membrane that is constantly shifting depending on the stories we tell ourselves. Lynn Margulis captured this in ecological and evolutionary terms

Unseen Masterpieces of Frida Kahlo
Kahlo can be found everywhere. She is the most famous female artist of all time, and her image is instantly recognisable, and unavoidable. "As an art historian, my main interest in Kahlo has been in her work as an artist. If this had been the main concern of most projects in recent decades, maybe I would say this book has no reason to be. But the truth is, it hasn't."

Evolution of a Literary Giant
THE NEW REPUBLIC (Literature) ***
The late-career essay collection can serve multiple purposes, none of which are mutually exclusive: It is a point of introduction to a new readership, one that may know the writer’s name but may be intimidated by their output, or simply want an easy place to start; it gives longtime readers a chance to encounter things they may have missed...

The US Neighbourhood without Cars
BBC (Travel)
***
In Culdesac – the US' first modern car-free neighbourhood built from scratch – you feel transported to a Mediterranean island. The central plaza, serves as an al fresco communal living room, the blare of traffic fades, replaced by the clink of glasses, the hum of conversation and the thump of a cornhole game.

In My Mother's House By Margaret McMullen
Told in alternating voices (Elizabeth and her mother Jenny), the story is remarkable for its fullness and rich details: the pieces of family silver the grandmother mails to the family, piece by piece, over the years; Jenny's war-time memories of her uncle's viola d'amore lessons; the fragrant smell of the wood floors at the Hofzeile, the family's longstanding yellow home in Vienna.

The Elegance of the Hedgehog By Muriel Barbery
The phenomenal New York Times bestseller that "explores the upstairs-downstairs goings-on of a posh Parisian apartment building" (Publishers Weekly). In an elegant hôtel particulier in Paris, Renée, the concierge, is all but invisible—short, plump, middle-aged, with bunions on her feet and an addiction to television soaps. Her only genuine attachment is to her cat, Leo. In short, she's everything society expects from a concierge at a bourgeois building in an upscale neighborhood. But Renée has a secret: She furtively, ferociously devours art, philosophy, music, and Japanese culture. With biting humor, she scrutinizes the lives of the tenants—her inferiors in every way except that of material wealth.
