Stories from Around the World that Affect Us

Mexico's Missing 130,000

Thousands of people have held protests across Mexico to highlight the country's many enforced disappearances

Relatives and friends of missing people, as well as human rights activists, marched through the streets of  Mexico, Guadalajara, Córdoba and other cities calling for justice and urged the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum to help find their missing loved ones.

In many cases, those disappeared have been forcibly recruited into the drug cartels – or murdered for resisting.

Israeli Strike Kills Houthi PM

BBC

(War)

Yemen's Houthi rebel movement has confirmed that its self-proclaimed Prime Minister Ahmed Ghaleb Nasser al-Rahawi was killed in an Israeli air strike earlier this week.

The Iran-backed group said several other senior officials were killed when the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted Yemen's capital, Sanaa, on Thursday.

The IDF said Rahawi and other senior Houthi officials were "eliminated" when Israeli fighter jets struck a gathering in the Sanaa area.

The Houthis have controlled much of north-western Yemen since 2014, after ousting the internationally recognised government from Sanaa and triggering a devastating civil war.

Russia Attacks Ukraine, as Kyiv Hits Oil Refineries

BBC

(War)

The latest barrage comes amid ongoing international efforts to secure a peace deal between the two warring nations - and days after the Ukrainian capital Kyiv faced the second largest aerial attack of the war so far, with at least 25 killed.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia launched nearly 540 drones and 45 missiles, urging tough new sanctions on Moscow.

Following the attack, Russia's defence ministry said all "targets of the strike have been achieved" and "designated objects have been hit" - a claim that has not been independently verified.

When I look out on the world I view it as a young man. That is why I don’t have any mirrors in my house.

The Cracks in China’s Rise

China has a lot of strengths. From the hardworking ethos of its citizens to the high modernist attitudes which allow it to pursue ambitious goals, this ancient civilization has a lot going for it. Anybody who is tempted to dismiss the country as a sclerotic mess should reconsider their priors (preferably by reading my recent piece on China’s strengths.)

THE NEW REPUBLIC

Did you hear the one about the Smithsonian hiding the bones of Bible giants in the basement? No? Well, Missouri Republican Representative Eric Burlinson did, and he recently said he wants to develop a “strategy” to use Congress’s investigative power to get to the bottom of the mystery.

Rewilding the Human Spirit

THE MARGINALIAN

(Philosophy/Literature)

If the twentieth century was the age of dictatorships — I grew up in one — reducing human beings to a herd, the twenty-first century, with its self-appointed moral despots, is the age of the tyranny of the herd itself. Having invented a merciless weapon of individual destruction — the pitchfork of the cancel mob — we are now doing to human nature what we have already done to nature, turning a biodiverse wilderness into a monoculture of a single crop deemed correct, forgetting there are infinitely many valid ways of being alive...

How Art Lost Its Way

Croce, who died last month at 90, was the dean of American dance critics during the heyday of American dance. I started my writing career as a dance critic, too, and for many years that’s all I ever dreamed of being as a writer. My first sixty-plus published articles were dance reviews, and their intended audience consisted, in its entirety, of Arlene Croce.

WOMAN OF LETTERS

(Literature)

These reviews have been occasioned by the recent publication of his second book, Emperor of Gladness, but they mostly are not about the new book—instead they attempt to settle scores with his successful first novel, On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous.

The strange thing about Vuong’s first novel is that these metaphors are only maybe twenty-five percent of the content: the rest is full of extremely precise, well-written scenes and dialogue. When Vuong wasn’t trying to be good, he was actually quite good.
