US Resumes Military Supplies to UkraineWAR
The US has resumed military supplies to Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky has said, after Washington halted some shipments of critical arms last week. US President Donald Trump told NBC News on Thursday that he had made a deal with Nato for the US to send Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine via the alliance, after a surge of Russian aerial attacks. Russia has stepped up drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities in recent weeks, causing record civilian casualties.

What South Korea's election signifiesPOLITICS The South Korean presidential election, held on June 3, was anything but routine. It followed unprecedented domestic crisis sparked by then-president Yoon Suk-yeol’s attempt to declare martial law on December 3, 2024. The National Assembly passed an impeachment motion against Yoon on December 14, and the Constitutional Court upheld it on April 4. In accordance with South Korean law, the presidential election was held within 60 days. The resulting contest was a test not only of political leadership but of democratic resilience itself.

Ruto the most disliked Kenyan president? POLITICS Protests against his administration began barely a year after he came into power. Three years in, many aggrieved Kenyans now want him gone – amid unrelenting protests with rallying calls of "Ruto must go" and "Ruto Wantam" (Ruto for one term).

A Wake-Up Call for Our Planet
POPULATION MATTERS Environment
Despite covering 70% of the Earth’s surface, less than 3% of the world’s oceans are protected, leaving vast areas vulnerable to exploitation. This reality is highlighted in Ocean with David Attenborough, released on 8 June for World Oceans Day. Few have had a more remarkable career than Population Matters patron Sir David Attenborough, who for over 70 years has guided us through the wonders of the natural world – and revealed how we are driving its destruction. David Attenborough’s new work shows us, undeniably, that one of the most important ecosystems is under critical threat – from us. Image created by Ideogram

The Jordan Peterson Generation
PERSUASION (Philosophy) By Matt Whiteley ***
The peak of Peterson’s fame in the late 2010s he seemed to be waging (often very successfully) a sort of one-man crusade against the complacent orthodoxies of liberal culture. He spoke for traditions ranging back to Carl Jung, Erich Neumann, the greats of psychology—and well beyond that. Read his books, listen to his many lectures, and to his fervent television debates, and it often felt that in him, and him alone, a sensibility survived that married secular humanism with deep faith...

Islam, Israel, and the Tragedy of Gaza
SAM HARRIS (Human Rights) ***
'Having recently expressed support for the US bombing of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, I’ve been reminded that my views about the ongoing conflict in the Middle East can seem perplexing. According to certain readers and podcast listeners, my thinking, while impeccable on other topics, has grown contorted by bias on this one. Some worry that my Jewish identity—and, by extension, an irrational attachment to the state of Israel—has caused me to avert my eyes from the horrors of Gaza.' In this article Sam explains his views and position.

The America of Yesterday
YASCHA MOUNK Environment
***
This Fourth of July 2025 feels different.
The Fourth of July has long been an occasion for Americana: for backyard BBQs and small-town parades, for patriotic speeches and easy conviviality, for baseball games and hot dog eating contests. What first struck me about America’s national holiday as someone who grew up in Germany was how unselfconscious that love of country felt for Americans of virtually every walk of life; here was proof that it is possible to love thine own without denigrating the other, to engage in love of country without being seduced by hatred or jingoism.

The film that changed Cinema
BBC (Performing Art) ***
Jean-Luc Godard was crystal clear about what he planned to do with his feature-length film debut, Breathless (À bout de souffle), which was released 65 years ago this month. He wanted to blow up the whole idea of what cinema was. In 1964, the director told the BBC's Olivier Todd: "It was a film which took everything the cinema had done – girls, gangsters, cars – exploded all this and put an end once and for all to the old style."

A Defense of Joy
THE MARGINALIAN (Philosophy) by Maria Popova
***
One of the most important things to have learned in life is that choosing joy in a world rife with reasons for despair is a countercultural act of courage and resistance, choosing it not despite the abounding sorrow we barely survive but because of it, because joy — like music, like love — is one of those entirely unnecessary miracles of consciousness that give meaning to survival with its bright allegiance to the most alive part of us.
