The Real Lesson of the Iran-Israel War
WAR

Over the past several years, one of the most important geopolitical developments has been  increasing cooperation between authoritarian states around the world. China and Russia have drawn much closer together economically and politically, as Beijing helps Moscow to evade any sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine. The two countries are at the center of a global authoritarian axis which includes North Korea, Iran, and a constellation of other autocratic states.

Israel negotiators to Gaza talks
WAR/HUMAN RIGHTS

Israel has decided to send a delegation to Qatar on Sunday for proximity talks with Hamas on the latest proposal for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said he had accepted the invitation despite what he described as the "unacceptable" changes that Hamas wanted to make to a plan presented by mediators from Qatar, the US and Egypt.

On Friday night, Hamas said it had delivered a "positive response" to the proposal for a 60-day ceasefire and that it was ready for negotiations.

Why Salman Rushdie Is Unable to Live or Die in Peace

Persuasion - Quico Toro

Mediocrities who silenced genius.

The Muslim Student Association at Claremont McKenna College was displeased with the administration’s decision to invite Rushdie. In the ossified, cut-and-paste rhetoric of the woke scold, the MSA called on students to speak out against “platforming individuals who have deeply offended marginalized communities.”

Student activists condemned what they characterized as his “disparaging comments about Palestinians.”

Rushdie, perhaps calculating he’s given as many eyes as it’s reasonable to give in defense of freedom of speech, withdrew his offer to speak.

How could they silence Salman freakin’ Rushdie in 2025?

Will the end of economic growth come by design — or disaster?

TED TALK

What if solving poverty, caring for nature and fostering well-being were the ultimate goals of the economy, instead of growth for its own sake? Environmentalist and economist Gaya Herrington proposes a shift in thinking from "never enough" to "enough for each," asking us to contemplate whether the end of exponential growth on a finite planet will come by design — or disaster.

Quote of The Week

It’s hard to feel anything but contempt for a person who has no respect for or empathy with anyone. But to maintain our dignity and respect for humanity, we need to try.

Mysterious settlement in Madagascar

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC

By Tom Metcalfe

***

The carved rock niches and stone walls of the mysterious Teniky archaeological site in Madagascar have long puzzled scientists. An early theory held that shipwrecked Portuguese sailors were the original architects in the 1500s. But a new study suggests Zoroastrian exiles from Persia constructed the site some centuries earlier, perhaps hoping to create a remote paradise on this almost mythical island.

Relationship Between Creativity and Community

THE MARGINALIAN

By Maria Popova

***

The vital relationship between creativity and connection has been tensed and twisted in the era of Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, where self-marketing so readily masquerades as some kind of “friend”-ship.

In 1950, epochs before our social media were but a glimmer in the eye of the possible, Henry Miller (December 26, 1891–June 7, 1980) reckoned with the seedling of our modern predicament (meditation on art and life.)

Migrants who passed through Ellis Island

BBC

by Myles Burke

***

On 12 November 1954, a Norwegian seaman Arne Petterson was questioned by immigration officials after overstaying his US shore leave. He risked being deported, but instead he was granted parole, and as he stepped on board a ferry in New York Harbor, he was snapped by a photographer. He was the last person to be processed on Ellis Island.
The same day, the island that had seen as millions of migrants' first glimpse the US closed  immigration facilities for good.

The World Is Producing More Food than Ever

WIRED

By Umair Irfan

***

We are producing more food than ever, but that harvest is concentrated in just a handful of breadbaskets.

Even America’s richest farmlands can’t outrun climate collapse. That’s everyone’s problem.

More than one-third of the world’s wheat and barley exports come from Ukraine and Russia, for example. Some of these highly productive farmlands, including major crop-growing regions in the United States, are on track to see the sharpest drops in harvests due to climate change.

The Planet Can’t Sustain Rapid Growth Much Longer

WIRED

By Bianca Nogrady

***

Half a century ago, a small group of esteemed thinkers that called itself the Club of Rome got together to chew over a thorny question: What would happen if humanity continued to consume the world’s finite resources as if they were limitless? Their efforts generated the now-famous 1972 paper “The Limits to Growth,” in which they modeled what might lie in wait for humanity.

Music and the Universe

THE MARGINALIAN

by Maria Popova

***

“Matter delights in music, and became Bach,” Ronald Johnson wrote in his stunning 1980 prose poem about music and the mind. This may be why music so moves and rearranges and harmonizes us, why in it we become most fully ourselves — “atoms with consciousness,” axons with feeling. When music courses through us, we are reminded that the mind and the body are one, and that the body — like music, like feeling, like the universe itself — is made of matter and time.
