The Real Lesson of the Iran-Israel War WAR
Over the past several years, one of the most important geopolitical developments has been increasing cooperation between authoritarian states around the world. China and Russia have drawn much closer together economically and politically, as Beijing helps Moscow to evade any sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine. The two countries are at the center of a global authoritarian axis which includes North Korea, Iran, and a constellation of other autocratic states.

The ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ passes US Senate & House
POLITICS The “Big Beautiful Bill” proposes major tax cuts, increased defence and immigration spending, and reductions to social safety nets. While it offers benefits to higher-income Americans, businesses, and the defence and fossil fuel sectors, it risks widening inequality, increasing the national debt by $3 trillion, and cutting support for low-income families, healthcare, and clean energy. It threatens social programmes, straining humanitarian resources, and undermining global climate efforts. Its impact is sharply divided, with clear winners and losers across American society and the world. Read full details at Vox, DW, and Newsweek.

Israel negotiators to Gaza talks WAR/HUMAN RIGHTS Israel has decided to send a delegation to Qatar on Sunday for proximity talks with Hamas on the latest proposal for a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said he had accepted the invitation despite what he described as the "unacceptable" changes that Hamas wanted to make to a plan presented by mediators from Qatar, the US and Egypt. On Friday night, Hamas said it had delivered a "positive response" to the proposal for a 60-day ceasefire and that it was ready for negotiations.

Why Salman Rushdie Is Unable to Live or Die in Peace
Persuasion - Quico ToroMediocrities who silenced genius.
The Muslim Student Association at Claremont McKenna College was displeased with the administration’s decision to invite Rushdie. In the ossified, cut-and-paste rhetoric of the woke scold, the MSA called on students to speak out against “platforming individuals who have deeply offended marginalized communities.” Student activists condemned what they characterized as his “disparaging comments about Palestinians.” Rushdie, perhaps calculating he’s given as many eyes as it’s reasonable to give in defense of freedom of speech, withdrew his offer to speak. How could they silence Salman freakin’ Rushdie in 2025? Image created by Ideogram

Will the end of economic growth come by design — or disaster? TED TALK |
|
|
What if solving poverty, caring for nature and fostering well-being were the ultimate goals of the economy, instead of growth for its own sake? Environmentalist and economist Gaya Herrington proposes a shift in thinking from "never enough" to "enough for each," asking us to contemplate whether the end of exponential growth on a finite planet will come by design — or disaster. Quote of The Week
It’s hard to feel anything but contempt for a person who has no respect for or empathy with anyone. But to maintain our dignity and respect for humanity, we need to try.

The World Is Producing More Food than Ever
Even America’s richest farmlands can’t outrun climate collapse. That’s everyone’s problem. More than one-third of the world’s wheat and barley exports come from Ukraine and Russia, for example. Some of these highly productive farmlands, including major crop-growing regions in the United States, are on track to see the sharpest drops in harvests due to climate change.

In 1882, the young Lou Andreas-Salomé—writer, psychoanalyst and femme fatale—appears with Friedrich Nietzsche and another man in a bizarre photograph taken in Luzern, Switzerland. Over thirty years later, an art student in Freud’s Vienna presents Lou Salomé with his own drawing based on the infamous photograph.
