A Free Speech Fight in Maine
CIVIL RIGHTS

The Maine House speaker and majority leader demanded that Libby delete her Facebook post. Libby refused, and that’s when her trouble started.

The plight of Libby illustrates a danger the US Founders recognised: Political majorities are prone to silence dissent. That is why the First Amendment staunchly stands against officials punishing Americans based on their viewpoint.

Turkey’s Resistance Takes to the Streets
CIVIL RIGHTS

On March 23, a Turkish court ordered the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on corruption charges. He was detained alongside 100 others, including district mayors, municipal officials, journalists, and businesspeople affiliated with the city government. İmamoğlu and his team face accusations of collaborating with the pro-Kurdish DEM Party, which currently holds 57 seats in parliament, in support of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)—a militant Kurdish organization designated as a terrorist group by both Turkey and the United States.

Predicting climate chaos
ENVIRONMENT

Last week, E&E News reporter Corbin Hiar unearthed an obscure but important research report from Morgan Stanley, one of the largest banks in America and one of the world’s biggest funders of fossil fuel projects.

In that report distributed March 17, Morgan Stanley analysts told investor clients that they believe the world is hurtling toward one of the most dangerous, terrifying global warming scenarios imaginable.

“We now expect a 3°C world,” the analysts wrote, citing “recent setbacks to global decarbonization efforts.”

Eulogy for a Republic

PERSUASION
By William A. Finnegan

There’s a quiet kind of grief that settles in when you begin researching how to leave your country—not out of hatred, not because of some performative declaration, but because you still love a place that no longer feels like home.

It’s not rebellion. It’s not spectacle. It’s something harder to admit: survival.

Authoritarianism Without Ideology

 PERSUASION

***

by Matt Johnson

The idea of upholding certain rules and norms in the international system is foreign to Trump. After he and Vice President J.D. Vance berated Volodymyr Zelenskyy during an Oval Office meeting in February, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov declared that the Trump administration’s foreign policy “largely aligns with our vision.” When Lavrov declared that the war was about building a new world order, he couldn’t have known that the United States would soon be such a willing participant in this process.

The Marginalian

***

The necessities of survival make our lives livable, but everything that makes them worth living partakes of the art of the unnecessary: beauty (the cave was no warmer or safer for our paintings, and what about the bowerbird?), love (how easily we could propagate our genes without it), music (we may have never milked it from mathematics, and the universe would have cohered just the same).

Philosophy

Marcus Aurelius said that what doesn’t transmit light creates its own darkness. Whoever misses golden hour misses the opportunity to see the world, even for just a moment, in its best light, misses what beauty is available to us each and every day. Not seeing that would lead to a dark life indeed.
